I feel like White Lies, who released their debut in 2009, owe a lot to Franz Ferdinand's sound. Here's one of the better deep cuts from their debut: (The latter dates itself with its Terry Wogan reference, though!) They were lucky to emerge when bands could still get into the charts due to the horrendous sales, given them the public profile to keep going to this day, a luxury not afforded to bands like them now. Take Me Out has become their signature song but Do You Want To? and The Dark of the Matinée were very successful when released as well. I find them patchy after their debut and I haven't listened to their newest material. Their debut album is excellent, and Michael was one of the first "guitar" songs I ever liked, so I guess they're important to my childhood musical development as well.
They're one of the most successful post-punk revival bands and possibly the single most successful 2000s dance-punk band. Judging by You Could Have It So Much Better, these style-conscious art kids are content to be a fine, entertaining pop band instead.They're still really well-known, I doubt many people that paid attention to music in the 2000s have forgotten them. Someday, maybe, they'll score a single as perfect as Pulp's "Common People", or pop up with a discoid treat as frothy as Blur's "Girls and Boys", but don't count on these guys to keep you supplied with serious close-to-the-heart-on-your-sleeve indie touchstones. They'll tell you that the interesting things here are the boys' new attempts at bringing down the tempo- tracks like "Walk Away", "Eleanor Put Your Boots on", and "Fade Together", where the band cribs jaunty moves from Revolver, Paul McCartney, and the Turtles. People will probably tell you that makes this less of a good album- a record full of energetic twists and flourishes that don't quite make up for a lack of real, memorable songs. Some stretches are packed with so many hooks and effortless swings and shifts and yowls that you might start to ignore them entirely. The most significant of them are the US Constitution creation and 13, 14 and 15 Amendments in particular, compromise of 1850, Dred Scott’s case, and the impact the anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin had on the people of the country. And they go on sounding like that across the length of this album: gleefully unselfconscious, increasingly glammy and trad-rock, and almost disturbingly amped-up, to the point where most of these songs feel like they're spewing confetti all over themselves, whether you feel like helping or not. But as another poster said, This Fire is quite similar to Take Me Out. Casual, insouciant greatness is kind of their thing, and these cocky kids seem to have known it from Day One- just consider "Take Me Out", where they spend half a minute pretending to sound like the Strokes before pulping their way down into something much better. hey skiff If you like Take Me Out, youll probably like their entire first album. As it turns out, Franz Ferdinand, like many an effective singles band, are immensely more lovable when they're on top of the world.
